ARTIST STATEMENT
This body of work is a continual exploration of interpreting the story and icon of the "Gingerbread Man" through my invented character the "Gingerblack Man." The Gingerblack Man acts as the consciousness of African Americans. The artwork is a narrative of connections or disconnections one has with themselves and the world around them. Each painting is linked to each other like a timeline or Genesis of how one thought or action can create different realities. The work speaks on how society shapes identity on the bases of assumptions and accusations. While incorporating pop culture, history, technology and "cookie-cutter" mentality, the art opens the viewer to confront issues of imagery, stereotypes, and the social political realities of chasing the American dream. The artwork's purpose is to engage the viewer in a humorous, yet provocative manner. Therefore the viewer is bringing their own interpretation and reflection to the piece of art.
